Join Us in the Most Exciting Chapter in Weir Public Library’s 119 Years of Existence!!

Dear Friends of the Library,

I would like to invite you to participate in the most exciting chapter in Weir Public Library’s 119 years of existence. Let me start by introducing myself, my name is Katherine Bandy, I am the 8th person to hold the Library Director’s position here since the library opened in 1896. I have lived in Weir for 18 years and have 3 wonderful children that have grown up visiting this library and participating in its summer reading programs. The library is a very important part of our small community, and I want to do everything I can to insure it is able to be open another 119 years.

Our library has been housed in three different buildings over the years. It has resided in its present location for the past 21 years. The present location started out in 1890 as the “St. Antone Catholic Church” which was later renamed “Sacred Heart Catholic Church” in 1907. As you can imagine, after 125 years, our building is not as structurally sound as it once was.

What once was one of the most beautiful buildings in Weir is quickly becoming one of the most unsafe buildings in town.
Due to the building’s age, harsh weather it has withstood over the years, the amount of use it has had, and the weight of the books, the floor is becoming weak and the foundation is imploding on itself. We have had several floor joists break, including the one that was under the back side of the Pepsi machine. The back side of the Pepsi machine sank into the floor, therefore we had to have the company come pickup their machine. The foundation is crumbling and settling so bad that it is pushing the ceilings in some of the rooms down onto cabinets and causing many other problems.

We want to be able to keep the library open, but in order to do that, we are going to have to build a new building. We are asking past Alum, citizens, patrons, friends of the library, and area businesses to be a part of making this happen by making a donation to the Weir Public Library’s building fund. No matter how large or small, every dollar matters. I am asking everyone to please help make a difference in our small community.

You can make a donation by sending a check or money order to Weir Public Library, P.O. Box 248, Weir, KS 66781 or by bringing it to the library in person, I would love to meet the amazing people, whose generosity is making it possible to continue the library’s legacy.
